Sinners is the latest film from Ryan Coogler, telling the story of Stack and Smoke (Michael B. Jordan), who return home to Mississippi and have to confront a great evil.

Everyone needs to go see this, and see it in a cinema. This is bold, ambitious, fresh and original. It’s everything that everyone wants from a Hollywood production and it is immense. This is Ryan Coogler firing on every cylinder imaginable and it has given us the best film of the year so far, and by a wide margin too.

The usage of music in this movie is on another level. The way the excellent score by Ludwig Goransson meshes with the blues tracks, just flows so well. There’s a particular scene involving a character singing, and the way that the song mixes in with the sound of characters stomping is just masterful. That’s not even going into the one music scene that everyone is talking about, which I won’t spoil, but it’s the sort of scene that IMAX is made for. Just an incredible blending of music and sound.

I could go on forever about the level of the performances but Michael B. Jordan is truly sensational in this film. It truly feels like you’re watching two different people, and I think that’s the biggest compliment you can give this performance. Miles Caton is a real standout, especially for his film debut, and Delroy Lindo is as good as ever. Honestly you can praise everyone in the ensemble, just a phenomenal cast.

I could honestly go on forever about every single little thing about this film. I just completely fell in love with it. Having now seen it twice, it somehow gets on a rewatch. Just a true masterwork and honestly, I think it’s the Next Great American Film. Just a complete masterpiece from top to bottom.
